How I found the gift of tongues -Christian devotional

1 Corinthians 14:2 2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

I was privileged to have been brought up in a Christian family, however, as a teenager I walked away from the things of God and I really did not believe and I took every opportunity to ridicule the things of God and Christian’s!

I was in my early thirties and although I was very anti-Christian on the surface I knew that deep down there was much more to life than what I was actually seeing. I decided to try and start going back to church, I knew that I couldn’t go to a boring church, I had to go to a happening church. So I found a large Pentecostal church about 20 miles away from where I lived, it felt very strange being in this church, I really hoped that I didn’t see anyone that I knew this church as I would have been highly embarrassed! There were people singing their hearts out and there were other people speaking in this strange language that I later discovered was called, “speaking in tongues”!

To cut a long story short in 1997 I accepted Jesus as my Saviour and Lord and it totally changed my life! For me, it was a process, it wasn’t an overnight thing that just happened, in fact, it was a very gradual thing, but the great thing is I have faith in God and that faith over the years has became stronger and stronger.

For many years I wanted to speak in tongues, but it never actually happened, I asked a very good friend to pray with me and to help me receive the gift of tongues, I seriously believe that something happened that night, but the problem was that I wasn’t opening my mouth to speak those tongues out! However, I didn’t speak in tongues, but I did feel the joy of the Lord and total peace in my heart that I would receive this beautiful language.

In 2009, I went to Kensington Temples Bible school, at the time Roberts Liardon was the Principal and I remember well the second day of Bible school. Every morning in the Bible school would have at least a good 30 minutes of solid prayer, it was a very powerful time. I remember on this particular occasion the principal asked if there was anyone in the room who could not speak in tongues, I immediately put my hand up to say that I couldn’t speaking tongues but I really wanted too! However, in that room there was such a hunger for God that by the time the principal had said this the whole Bible school speaking out in powerful tongues and no one saw my hand go up or heard me speak, as far as I know, I was the only one who could not speak in tongues in that room.

I really didn’t want to miss out on the gift of tongues and at that moment I said to God that I really want to speak in tongues, I don’t want to be the only one in this Bible school who can’t speak in tongues! At that moment I said to God please give me the gift of tongues and I opened my mouth and strange words came out immediately, I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me! After 12 years of being a Christian I was finally speaking in tongues, such a beautiful gift from God!

I thank God forgive me the gift of tongues that day and since that day tongues have never stopped, they just flowed immediately, it’s such a wonderful gift and a direct language to heaven! I think the reason that I didn’t receive tongues earlier was partly because I didn’t open my mouth to speak out in tongues, I felt the joy of the Holy Spirit, I believe that these tongues were in me but I just wasn’t opening my mouth to let them out! I appreciate when you start speaking in tongues it seems extremely straightforward, but when you can’t speak in tongues you wonder if you will ever receive that wonderful gift. Another reason I believe that people don’t speak in tongues is because they don’t ask, sometimes we need to come to God boldly in faith and believe that he is going to do it. The day I asked God for the gift of tongues there was such a powerful anointing in the room that I believe it was almost impossible not to speak in tongues, I thank God on a regular basis for that wonderful day!

If you do not speak in tongues and you really want to, first of all I would get around strong people of God who speak in tongues and who know who they are in Christ, every Christian needs to be around strong people to grow their Christian faith and this is exactly the same for speaking in tongues.

Although it was 12 years before I first spoke in tongues it wasn’t something that particularly bothered me, I really just wanted to receive this wonderful gift from God. Please don’t worry or feel inadequate if you don’t receive the gift of tongues straightaway, I believe that I had been filled with the spirit many times even though I didn’t speak in tongues. Just keep believing God for the gift of tongues and anything else that you may need in your life, he will answer when you call his name.
