Why Two Or Three Monitors Are Better Than One – Efficiency Tip

The title of my blog post today is, Why two or three monitors are better than one.In this post I explain why, after years of experience working from home and as a digital nomad, I firmly believe that using two or three external monitors dramatically improves efficiency compared to a single laptop screen.
My Current Setup
While travelling in Greece and working with a 10-year-old laptop, I’ve felt the difference of being limited to one screen. Normally, I work from home in the UK with a setup of three 27-inch Dell monitors. Some might think that overkill—but it’s made a huge difference in multitasking, research, video editing, and content creation.
The Struggle of One Screen
- Switching to a 15-inch Dell laptop felt like a significant downgrade — navigating between apps and dragging windows felt tedious.
- Productivity slowed noticeably due to the limitations of a single display.
Why Invest in Multiple Monitors?
About five years ago, I purchased two Dell 27″ monitors at roughly £130 each. Realising their impact on workflow, I added a third. It paid off—now I can’t work without them.
Portable Monitors for Digital Nomads
If you travel regularly, portable dual‑screen monitors offer a great alternative. I’ve seen a 15″ folding model (with potential 17″ options) that folds like a laptop and fits easily into a bag. Though pricier, it can be very useful on the move.
Where to Use Which
If you have a desk—home or office—traditional 27″ monitors are unbeatable for usability. For travel or flexible workspaces, portable fold-up screens might suit better, despite higher cost.
Efficiency Tips
- Invest in at least two external monitors if you work at a desk.
- Consider a portable dual‑screen monitor setup if you’re a digital nomad.
- Even budget traditional monitors can dramatically improve workflow and save time.
