A Message For Anyone Building An Online Business

The title of my blog post and video is a message for anyone building an online business. If you are building an online business (or you are thinking about starting one), I want to share a simple message that I believe many people need to hear at this time of year. Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page.

As we move from Christmas into the New Year, I see a lot of excitement about “starting an online business” and “making money online”. Enthusiasm is a good thing. But I also see far too many people give up far too early.

And the truth is this: building a real online business usually takes longer than people expect. Not because it is impossible, but because it requires steady effort, patience, and the ability to keep going when progress feels slow.

Why so many people quit too soon

In my experience, the main reason people quit is not a lack of ability. It is usually a mismatch between expectations and reality.

People start out thinking:

  • “I’ll be earning in a few weeks.”
  • “I’ll have traffic quickly.”
  • “If it doesn’t work fast, it must not work.”

But for most people, it does not happen overnight. There are exceptions, but in normal terms, if you want something stable and long-term, it takes time to build.

The danger zone: quitting just before the breakthrough

One thing I have noticed over the years is that people often quit at the worst possible time:

  • Some quit after a few weeks because they “can’t see results”.
  • Some quit after three months because they feel distracted or discouraged.
  • Some quit after nine months, just before the point where the momentum starts to build.

If you have ever felt like you are “close but not quite there”, you are not alone. That is a common part of the process.

Why I still recommend a structured platform

I have been a member of Wealthy Affiliate for over 11 years. It is not a get-rich-quick platform. It is a training platform that teaches you how to build an online business step-by-step, even if you start with no knowledge.

One of the reasons it works for many people is that it removes a lot of the guesswork. You are not trying to “figure everything out” all at once. You follow a structure and build as you learn.

A quick reminder about how online business really works

If you strip it right back, the basics are simple:

  • Choose a niche (something you can stick with).
  • Build a website (or a simple online “base”).
  • Create helpful content consistently.
  • Learn traffic and promotion over time.
  • Improve as you go and stay focused.

I wrote a post that breaks this down in plain terms here:

Don’t get sidetracked by distractions

Another reason people fail is distractions. A new tool, a new system, a new “opportunity”, a new promise of faster results. Before they know it, they are starting again… and again… and again.

That does not mean you should never test anything new. I test things myself. But the core message is: keep your main focus on building something real and consistent.

(If you are curious, here is a recent post where I mention testing another training system alongside my usual work.)

If you are starting (or restarting) in 2026

If you are going into the New Year with the goal of building an online business, my encouragement is simple:

  • Give yourself time.
  • Stay consistent.
  • Avoid constant distractions.
  • Follow a clear structure and keep moving forward.

You do not have to know everything today. You just need to take the next step, and then the next one after that.
