The title of my blog post today is, simple time management tips that work! Time management is something I am continually working on. It’s never perfect, but having a simple structure in place helps me stay on track when working online. In this post, I want to share what I do to organise my day, the tools I use, and how I try to avoid distractions.
Why Time Management Is Harder Online
When I had my offline business, things were very straightforward. I’d turn up to a job and work until it was finished. There were no distractions, just the task in front of me. Working online is very different — social media, emails, and endless websites are just one click away, and it’s easy to lose track of time.
I know there are plenty of productivity apps available, but for me, keeping it simple works best. Here’s what I use.
The Tools I Use
1. PC Timer
On my computer, I use the built-in timer (set to 25 minutes). Every time the timer runs out, it flashes up to remind me that time is ticking by. I reset it and keep going. It’s almost like an accountability tool that nudges me to stay focused.
2. Google Calendar
I use Google Calendar to schedule my tasks. One feature I really like is the ability to add tasks and notes quickly. If I get an idea, I can add it in seconds, attach a link or note, and then check it off once it’s complete.
3. Microsoft Word To-Do List
I keep a simple to-do list in Microsoft Word. It’s nothing fancy, but it gives me a clear plan each day. There’s something very rewarding about ticking tasks off and seeing what I’ve achieved. It also stops me from wasting time wondering what to do next.
Other Tools I’m Exploring
Recently, I came across a post on the Wealthy Affiliate platform about a tool called Workona. It looks like it could be useful for productivity and organisation, and I plan to try it out in the future. However, I often find that some of these apps have a steep learning curve, which can be a distraction in itself. Personally, I’d rather spend my time getting work done than learning new software — though I admit, sometimes I probably need to be more patient!
Avoiding Distractions
One of the biggest challenges when working online is dealing with distractions. Research suggests it can take around 18–20 minutes to regain full focus after being interrupted. That’s a lot of lost time during the day. By sticking to my timer, calendar, and list, I can minimise those distractions and make better use of my working hours.
What About You?
I’d love to know how you manage your time. Do you use a timer? Do you prefer digital tools, or do you still like pen and paper lists? Feel free to share your methods in the comments below — it’s always good to learn from others.
