In this blog post and video, I want to talk about how an online business lets you work from anywhere. One of the greatest advantages of building an online business is not simply the possibility of earning money. For me, one of the biggest benefits is the freedom and flexibility it can create over time.
I recently returned from Greece, where I was able to continue working online while enjoying a completely different environment. While I was there, I wrote a blog post on the Wealthy Affiliate platform called Today My Office Is in Greece. The purpose of the post was not to show off a holiday or pretend that working online is always glamorous. I simply wanted to encourage other people who are building an online business and show them what can become possible when they remain consistent and keep moving forward.
There are plenty of people online who make it sound as though success happens almost immediately. In my experience, that is not how a genuine business works. Building an online business takes time, persistence and a willingness to keep learning, just as it does with any traditional business.
Building an Online Business Takes Time
I have been working online for more than 20 years, starting from the time when I built my first website. That does not mean it takes 20 years to become successful, as I have also been involved in other businesses during that time. However, it does mean that I have seen how the online world has developed and how many more opportunities are available today compared with when I first started.
Like most people, I began with very limited knowledge. Over the years I have learnt how to build websites, create written content, make videos, use WordPress, understand affiliate marketing and improve the way I communicate online. I have also made plenty of mistakes along the way, but that is part of the learning process.
Every article you write, every video you publish and every improvement you make helps to build something for the future. Good content can continue attracting visitors long after it has been published, which is one of the reasons I believe content creation is such a valuable part of an online business.
I recently shared some of the questions I now ask before creating content in my article, After 20 Years Online, These Are the Questions I Ask First.
My Office Changed, but My Business Continued
At home, I work from a dedicated office with a desktop computer and three large monitors. It is a comfortable setup and makes it much easier to move between websites, documents, video-editing software and other tools without constantly changing windows.
In Greece, things were rather different. I was working from a hotel room using my 12-year-old Dell Latitude laptop. The laptop still works perfectly well for many everyday tasks, although it is now becoming outdated for some of the newer artificial intelligence tools and more demanding video work.
Working from a single laptop screen was not as convenient as using my normal three-monitor setup, but it still allowed me to write blog posts, reply to comments, check my websites, create content and keep my online business moving forward. As long as I had a reliable internet connection, I was able to continue working.
This experience reminded me that one of the greatest strengths of an online business is that it can travel with you. Your normal office may be more comfortable, but your business does not have to stop simply because you are away from home.
Working From Anywhere Is About Choice
When people hear the phrase “work from anywhere,” they often picture someone sitting on a beach with a laptop. In reality, working online while travelling is usually much more practical than that.
My routine in Greece was quite straightforward. I would normally get up early, do some work in the morning and then go out while the temperature was more comfortable. During the hottest part of the afternoon, I would return to the hotel, make use of the air conditioning and complete another five or six hours of work.
I was not trying to avoid work. I was simply arranging my work around the location and the weather. That is where the real freedom comes in. An online business can give you more choice over where you work, when you work and how you organise your day.
For me, that flexibility is extremely valuable because Greece is a country I enjoy visiting and somewhere I would like to spend more time in the future. Having an online business means I can continue working without always being tied to one location.
There Are Many Ways to Earn Money Online
One of the most common questions people ask is what they can actually do online. The answer is that there are many different possibilities, depending on your interests, experience and willingness to learn.
Some people build niche websites and earn through affiliate marketing. Others create YouTube channels, write blogs, offer freelance services, sell digital products, create online courses or work remotely for an employer. The internet has opened up opportunities that did not exist when I first started building websites.
The important thing is to choose a genuine business model, learn how it works and give it enough time to develop. Constantly jumping from one idea to another usually makes progress much slower. It is generally better to choose a direction, develop the necessary skills and keep improving over time.
For a practical starting point, you may find my article How to Start Building an Online Business Now useful. I have also written about how to start making money online with a zero budget.
Why I Use Wealthy Affiliate
I have been a member of Wealthy Affiliate for around 12 years. It is a training platform designed to help people learn about affiliate marketing, website creation, blogging, search engine optimisation and other aspects of building an online business.
One of the reasons I have remained a member for so long is that the platform is suitable for people at different levels. Complete beginners can start with the core training, while more experienced members can continue developing their skills, building websites and connecting with other online business owners.
The Wealthy Affiliate community is also useful because members can ask questions, share their experiences and help one another. My original post, Today My Office Is in Greece, was written to encourage members who may still be at the beginning of their journey.
You can read my Wealthy Affiliate review after 11 years, where I explain why I have remained a member for so long. I have also written about why Wealthy Affiliate training works and why I stayed at Wealthy Affiliate for 11 years.
Portable Technology Makes Remote Work Easier
Working from my hotel room also made me think about how much portable technology has improved. Although my old Dell Latitude laptop still works, I am considering upgrading before my next trip, especially as modern software and artificial intelligence tools require more processing power.
I have also been looking at portable monitor systems. Some of these attach to a laptop and provide two additional screens, creating a three-monitor arrangement that can fold away when travelling. As someone who is used to working with three monitors at home, this could make a considerable difference to my productivity while working away.
Modern laptops, portable monitors, cloud storage and reliable internet connections have made it far easier to run an online business from different locations. You no longer need a large office full of equipment to complete many online tasks.
Internet access is obviously essential when working remotely. I have previously explained how to use an Android phone as a Wi-Fi router, which can be particularly useful when travelling or when hotel Wi-Fi is unreliable.

The Real Benefit Is Flexibility
Making money is obviously an important part of any business, but I do not believe it is the only reason to build something online. The ability to arrange your work around your life can be just as valuable.
An online business does not mean that you never have to work. In many cases, you may work harder while building it, especially during the early stages. The difference is that over time you may gain more control over your schedule and location.
That freedom may allow you to travel, spend more time with family, work from home or simply avoid a daily commute. Everyone has different reasons for wanting an online business, but having more choice is something that appeals to many people.
Think Long Term
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is expecting results too quickly. It is easy to become discouraged when a website does not receive much traffic or a video does not attract many views straight away.
However, online businesses are built through repeated effort. Articles, videos, websites and email lists all take time to develop. The people who continue learning and creating are often the ones who eventually see the greatest results.
It is better to think of an online business as something you build gradually rather than something that produces instant income. Small improvements made consistently can create substantial progress over time.
I have written more about this in Why Most People Quit Affiliate Marketing Too Soon. The article explains why many people stop before their work has had enough time to produce results.
Using YouTube to Build an Online Business
YouTube can also play an important part in building an online business. Videos allow you to explain ideas in your own words, demonstrate products and services, answer questions and build trust with viewers over time.
One advantage of video content is that it can work alongside your website. A video can be embedded into a blog post, while the blog post can provide additional information and links for viewers who want to learn more.
If you create YouTube videos, my article The Easiest Way to Never Run Out of Video Ideas may help you find more subjects to cover. You may also find Seven Things to Do Before Recording Your Next YouTube Video useful.
Final Thoughts
Working from Greece reminded me why I value having an online business. I was still able to write, create videos, reply to people and manage my websites, even though I was hundreds of miles away from my normal office.
The experience was not about pretending that work disappears when you travel. It was about having the freedom to choose a different location without putting everything on hold.
If you are at the beginning of your online journey, I hope this encourages you to keep going. Building an online business takes time, but the skills and assets you create can eventually give you opportunities that would not be possible in a traditional location-based business.
Your office does not always have to be the same room, the same building or even the same country. With the right skills, a suitable laptop and a reliable internet connection, your business can go wherever you go.
