How To Install OBS On Windows

In this video and blog post, I want to show you how to install OBS Studio on a Windows computer. OBS is something I have been meaning to try for some time, mainly because it is a free tool that allows you to record your screen, share your screen and go live on various platforms.

I normally use Camtasia for recording and editing my YouTube videos, and I still think Camtasia is excellent for editing, callouts, zooming in and polishing a finished video. However, OBS is very useful if you want to go live, record your screen for free, or create a more flexible recording setup.

What Is OBS Studio?

OBS Studio is a free program that can be used for screen recording and live streaming. It is popular with YouTubers, live streamers, gamers, teachers, trainers and anyone who wants to record or broadcast what is happening on their computer screen.

One of the biggest advantages of OBS is that it is free. There are paid alternatives available, and some of them are very good, but they can also become quite expensive. For anyone starting out, OBS is a very good option to consider.

Why Download OBS From The Official Source?

The first thing I would recommend is to download OBS from the official source. There are various websites that offer OBS downloads, but I always prefer to go directly to the proper website or the Microsoft Store.

This helps reduce the risk of downloading the wrong file, outdated software, or anything that has been bundled with extras that you do not want on your computer.

How To Install OBS Studio On Windows

Here is the basic process for installing OBS Studio on a Windows computer:

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Go to the official OBS website at obsproject.com.
  3. Click on the download option.
  4. Choose the Windows version.
  5. You can either download the installer or use the Microsoft Store option.
  6. If using the Microsoft Store, click to open the store.
  7. Click install.
  8. Wait for OBS Studio to download and install.
  9. Once installed, click open.
  10. When OBS opens, check whether there is an update available.

Checking For OBS Updates

One thing I noticed after installing OBS through the Microsoft Store was that an update was available straight away. That may seem a little strange, but it is still worth checking.

To check for updates in OBS:

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. Go to the Help menu.
  3. Click Check For Updates.
  4. If an update is available, install it.
  5. Once the update has completed, launch OBS again.

Keeping software updated is always a good habit, especially when you are using it for recording or live streaming.

OBS Studio Compared With Camtasia

I have used Camtasia for many years, and I still use it regularly for my YouTube videos. Camtasia is excellent for editing, adding annotations, zooming into parts of the screen, trimming mistakes and producing a finished video.

OBS is slightly different. OBS is more about capturing and broadcasting. It is very useful for recording your screen, adding a webcam, using different scenes and going live.

A simple way to look at it is this:

  • OBS is excellent for recording and live streaming.
  • Camtasia is excellent for editing and polishing videos.

For many creators, the two programs can work well together. You can record with OBS, then bring the recording into Camtasia for editing afterwards.

Why OBS Is Useful For YouTube Creators

If you are creating YouTube videos, OBS can be useful in several ways. You can use it to record tutorials, show your screen, include your webcam, record software demonstrations, or stream live to YouTube.

For anyone who wants to create online tutorials, OBS is a tool worth learning. It may look a little complicated when you first open it, but you do not need to learn everything at once. The main thing is to start with the basics.

What I Will Be Learning Next

This video was simply about installing OBS Studio on a Windows computer. The next step is to learn how to use it properly.

Some of the things I want to look at include:

  • How to record your screen with OBS.
  • How to add a microphone.
  • How to add a webcam.
  • How to set the recording quality.
  • How to save your recordings.
  • How to use OBS for live streaming.

Once I have worked through the basics, I plan to create more videos showing what I have learned.

Final Thoughts

Installing OBS Studio on Windows is fairly straightforward. The most important thing is to make sure you download it from a trusted source, either the official OBS website or the Microsoft Store.

OBS is free, powerful and widely used, so it is certainly worth considering if you want to record your screen or go live. It may take a little time to learn, but once the basics are in place, it can become a very useful part of your video creation setup.
