How To Start A Web Business -Finding A Niche
I’m doing a series of YouTube videos on how to start a web business – finding a niche. In this video, I want to show you how to find a niche for your web business. Right now, you can see that I am on the Wealthy Affiliate platform, I have been a member of this platform for eight years exactly. Yesterday, I created a post entitled; how does affiliate marketing work?
The Wealthy Affiliate platform is a platform that teaches you all about Internet marketing and how to create a successful online business. The training principles taught on the platform can be used for any niche that you wish to market.
I won’t go into all the training on Wealthy Affiliate; I will just take you to the getting started page. You can sign up and create a free account and have access to this training. This particular lesson is about choosing a niche and it’s something that I’m going to take you through in this video.
What Is A Niche?
Looking at the Cambridge dictionary, the word niche is described as a job or position that is very suitable for someone, especially one that they like. So to me, when we are talking about a web business. I would say that a niche is something that we have a passion. It’s also something that we have a solid interest in.
Some people now starting a web business they like to look for where the money is. I do understand this and that can be looked at as you gain more experience. However, when you’re first starting out online I would definitely go down the route of finding a niche that you are passionate about and have knowledge about. I can’t think of anything much worse than trying to write about something that I didn’t have any interest in or knowledge of.
If you look at my website on garden and horticultural machinery. It’s fairly easy for me to write articles on the website as it’s something that I have a passion for. I also have a reasonable amount of knowledge, so it’s fairly easy for me to write various blog posts.
I can’t imagine trying to write an article, for example, on football, I have nothing against football, but I just don’t know anything about the subject. So be very difficult for me to write articles on the subject.
Finding Our Niche
Let’s go over to the Amazon website; in the search box, I have put the word “garden”. The only reason I put in the word garden is that it’s the first word or niche that came to mind.
So as we look into the garden niche, you can see there are many different types of subjects within the garden niche. We can see garden furniture and accessories, garden sculptures and statues, pathway lighting, lanterns etc. All these different categories can potentially become a niche.
Let’s try another search in the Amazon search bar; I’m going to try putting the word computer in. As you can see, as I start typing, all different types of computer items appear.
I’m just going to put the word “computer” into the Amazon search bar. When we look down the left-hand side of the page. We can see that we can sort by brand or by the department. So in the department, we have desktop PCs, laptops, monitors, accessories etc. So once again, we can narrow down a niche to whatever we want to.
Affiliate Programs
Almost every single niche that you can think of has an affiliate program. I won’t talk about affiliate programs in this article as I have already created a video on the subject, which you can see here. Another way of finding a niche is to go to Google and start typing in any subject you can think of. For the purpose of the video, I’m going to type in football. It’s a niche that I have no knowledge in whatsoever; the Google results are not the best example.
However, I’m sure in football, there is lots of merchandise, clothing etc., that can be marketed through affiliate marketing. The main thing is not to go where the money is but where your passion is.
What To Do If You Can’t Find A Niche
Finally, if you can’t find a niche and to be fair, I’m sure that most people can. Why not have a look at the Wealthy Affiliate Boot Camp course? It tells you everything you need to do to promote the Wealthy Affiliate platform.
Once again, you have to have an interest in Internet marketing. Hence why think it’s really better to find your own niche. Although the Boot Camp is still a great option. As the principles of affiliate marketing can be learnt on the Boot Camp course.
The Affiliate Boot Camp course consists of seven courses and a total of 70 lessons. You can sign up for the Boot Camp for free. However, you only have access to the first phase of the course. Although, I think is always good to test something out before you purchase, Wealthy Affiliate allows you to do this without using a credit card.
A Solid Plan
The great thing is about the Wealthy Affiliate Boot Camp course is that it gives you a solid plan on how to carry out affiliate marketing. The lessons are all laid out step-by-step; each lesson contains a video and also written documentation of the course.
After you have completed each lesson, you need to complete several tasks before you can go on to the next course. It’s important that you do not miss anything out as great effort has gone into compiling the Boot Camp.
Once you have carried out all the tasks and ticked the boxes, you can go on to the next lesson. Make sure and be honest with yourself and carry out everything that is necessary to move you forward.
Another great thing about the course is that you have a very active community where you can ask questions, share ideas, etc. It’s also a very friendly platform, a platform where people want to see you move forward with your online business.
