In this blog post, talk about an AI tool that is saving me hours every week. I also want to share my early experience with an AI-powered dictation tool called WhisperFlow. It’s actually spelt like this Wispr Flow, which is a bit painful for someone like me.
I have only been using Whisper Flow for around two days, so this is not intended to be an in-depth review. However, my first impressions have been very positive, and the software is already helping me save a considerable amount of time.
For many years, I relied heavily on Dragon NaturallySpeaking. As someone who cannot type particularly quickly, speech recognition software has always been an important part of my working day.

Unfortunately, Dragon recently started causing problems on my desktop computer. It appeared to be clashing with something on the machine, particularly when I was using web browsers, and I could not find a satisfactory solution.
I therefore needed to find a reliable alternative quickly. That is when I started testing Whisper Flow.

What Is Whisper Flow?
WhisperFlow is an AI-powered speech-to-text tool that allows you to dictate into websites, applications, emails, documents and social media platforms.
Rather than typing every word manually, you hold down a keyboard shortcut, speak naturally and then release the keys. Whisper Flow processes your speech and inserts the text into the active window.
On my Windows computer, the default shortcut requires me to hold down the Control key and the Windows key while speaking.
This is slightly different from how I used Dragon NaturallySpeaking. With Dragon, I could leave the microphone active and switch it on or off using the mouse or a keyboard key.
Holding down two keys takes a little getting used to, although there may be an option to change the shortcut. At the moment, I have left it on the default setting while I familiarise myself with the software.
Why I Needed an Alternative to Dragon NaturallySpeaking
I used Dragon NaturallySpeaking successfully for many years. It allowed me to create blog posts, write emails, respond to comments and produce other written content much faster than I could by typing.
However, the technology now feels relatively old compared with some of the newer AI-powered dictation tools.
My main problem was not necessarily the accuracy. Dragon began slowing down my desktop computer whenever I had a browser open. Switching between browser tabs could take one or two seconds, even when the Dragon microphone was turned off.
As soon as I completely disabled Dragon, the browser tabs responded instantly again.
I tried various possible solutions, including testing different browsers and changing computer settings, but the problem remained. Because I rely heavily on dictation, I needed to find another solution.
My First Impressions of Whisper Flow
After approximately 36 hours of testing WhisperFlow, I have found it quicker and generally more accurate than Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
It is not perfect, and it did make a few errors during my video demonstration. However, I was speaking while recording a video, moving between windows and explaining what I was doing at the same time.
Under normal working conditions, the accuracy has generally been very good.
I have already used it across several different platforms, including:
- X, formerly known as Twitter
- Web browsers
- Online forms
- Social media comment boxes
- Different writing applications
One of the biggest advantages is that it appears to work directly inside almost any text box.
Dictating Directly Into Different Windows
One limitation I experienced with Dragon NaturallySpeaking was that it did not always work correctly in every application.
For example, when I tried dictating directly into Twitter, Dragon would sometimes produce meaningless text. I would have to dictate into another window first and then copy and paste the text into Twitter.
That interrupted my workflow and created additional work.
Whisper Flow has so far allowed me to dictate directly into the active window. I can move from Facebook to X, then into an email or another application without needing to change my dictation setup.
This may sound like a small difference, but when you write a large amount of content every day, removing those extra steps can save a considerable amount of time.
Using the right equipment and software can make a major difference to your efficiency. I have also written about why two or three monitors are better than one and how my three-monitor setup helps me work more productively.
My Facebook Dictation Test
In the video, I demonstrated WhisperFlow by responding to a Facebook post about habits from the Bible.
I clicked inside the comment box, held down the Control and Windows keys and dictated my response. As soon as I released the keys, WhisperFlow processed my speech and inserted the text into the comment box.
There were a couple of small errors that needed correcting, but editing two or three words was still much quicker than typing the entire comment manually.
Most of the time, I have not needed to make many corrections at all.
My Test on X
I then demonstrated the tool inside X.
This was especially useful because Dragon had not worked properly for me on this platform. Whisper Flow allowed me to click inside the reply box and dictate directly into it without producing the strange text I had experienced previously.
The software also added punctuation and separated the text into sentences.
Some of the sentences were slightly shorter than I would normally write, but I am still learning how to use the program effectively. There may be additional settings that give me more control over the writing style, formatting and sentence structure.
How Many Words Have I Dictated?
When I recorded the video, I had already dictated approximately 3,835 words with WhisperFlow.
That was after starting to use it on Saturday evening and being away from my computer for much of the following day.
I had not yet used it to create any substantial blog posts, so most of those words came from emails, comments, social media posts and everyday online work.
This demonstrates how much writing I do and why reliable speech-to-text software is so valuable to me.
How Whisper Flow Could Help Content Creators
Whisper Flow could be particularly helpful for people who regularly create written content.
This may include:
- Bloggers
- Affiliate marketers
- YouTube creators
- Social media managers
- Online business owners
- Virtual assistants
- Freelance writers
- People who write large numbers of emails
- Anyone who finds typing difficult or slow
AI should not replace your personality, experience or judgement. However, it can help you work more efficiently and remove some of the repetitive work involved in content creation.

Creating Content More Efficiently
One of the biggest challenges when building an online business is finding enough time to complete everything.
A typical working day may include:
- Writing blog posts
- Recording and editing videos
- Responding to comments
- Writing emails
- Publishing social media posts
- Researching keywords
- Updating websites
- Learning new skills
Saving a few minutes on each task can add up to several hours across the week.
Speech recognition software allows me to get my thoughts onto the screen much more quickly than typing. I can then go back through the text, correct any mistakes and improve the formatting.

Is Whisper Flow Completely Accurate?
No speech recognition tool is going to be completely accurate all the time.
Your results may be affected by:
- Your microphone quality
- Background noise
- Your speaking speed
- Your accent
- Unusual names or technical terminology
- Internet or computer performance
- How clearly you speak
During my demonstration, WhisperFlow made a few errors. However, the important question is whether correcting those errors takes less time than typing everything manually.
For me, the answer so far is definitely yes.
The Importance of a Good Microphone
A good microphone can make a difference when using any speech recognition tool.
You do not necessarily need an expensive studio microphone, but your voice needs to be clear enough for the software to process accurately.
It is also helpful to work somewhere reasonably quiet. Background conversations, television noise, machinery or loud music may reduce accuracy.
I personally work much more efficiently when I have a quiet environment. It helps with dictation, video recording, concentration and content creation in general.
Whisper Flow Privacy Settings
Before using Whisper Flow extensively, I recommend going through the privacy settings carefully.
Speech recognition software processes the words you dictate, so it is important to understand what information may be collected, stored or used.
Do not simply accept every default setting without reading it.
Open the settings, review the available privacy options and select the choices that you are comfortable with.
This is particularly important if you plan to dictate private emails, business information, customer details or other sensitive material.
I am still learning more about this side of the software and will share further information when I have used it for longer.

Advantages I Have Noticed So Far
Although I have only used Whisper Flow for a short time, several advantages have already stood out.
- It is generally more accurate than my recent experience with Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
- It processes my speech quickly.
- It works directly inside different websites and applications.
- It reduces the amount of typing I need to do.
- It allows me to respond to social media posts more quickly.
- It could save me several hours every week.
- It is easy to start using.
- There is a free option available for testing.
Disadvantages and Limitations
There are also a few points that I am still getting used to.
- I currently need to hold down two keyboard keys while speaking.
- I cannot immediately see the text until I release the keys.
- It occasionally makes mistakes.
- I need to learn more about the available settings.
- The sentence structure is not always exactly how I would write it.
- The privacy options need to be reviewed carefully.
These are early observations rather than final conclusions. I intend to continue testing the software and create another video when I have learned how to use it more efficiently.
WhisperFlow Versus Dragon NaturallySpeaking
It would be unfair to make a complete comparison after only using Whisper Flow for two days.
I used Dragon NaturallySpeaking for many years, whereas I am still at the beginning of my experience with Whisper Flow.
Dragon has more established voice commands and can offer extensive control over a computer when properly configured. WhisperFlow currently feels more focused on converting speech into written text quickly and accurately.
However, for my present needs, WhisperFlow has several significant advantages.
It is faster, appears more accurate and works more reliably across the different windows and websites I use.
Most importantly, it is not creating the browser slowdown that I experienced while running Dragon on my desktop computer.
Who Should Consider Trying Whisper Flow?
Whisper Flow may be worth trying if:
- You cannot type particularly quickly.
- You create a large amount of written content.
- You currently use Dragon NaturallySpeaking but want an AI alternative.
- You write regular social media posts and comments.
- You want to dictate directly into different websites.
- You suffer from discomfort when typing for long periods.
- You want to improve your online productivity.
- You are looking for a modern speech-to-text tool.
The best way to find out whether it works for you is to test the free option using your own computer, microphone, accent and normal working applications.
My Final Thoughts on Whisper Flow
My first impressions of Whisper Flow are very positive.
I originally started testing it because Dragon NaturallySpeaking was no longer working properly on my desktop machine. I needed something that would allow me to continue creating content without relying on slow manual typing.
After only a couple of days, WhisperFlow already appears to be a practical replacement for much of the dictation work I previously carried out with Dragon.
It is quick, generally accurate and works across the different applications I use throughout the day.
There are still several features and settings that I need to explore. I also want to spend more time looking at the privacy options and finding out whether I can customise the keyboard shortcut and writing style.
However, based on my experience so far, it is certainly worth trying if you regularly create blog posts, emails, social media content or other written material.
